at some point in our lives, we may feel stuck or face overwhelming challenges.

Reaching out for help from somebody on the outside can help. You may have started the process by talking with a friend, family member, doctor, or pastor. The next step you take will be important as you seek professional counseling. LifeWorks Counseling is here for you, skilled at listening, caring and hearing you. We can help you to see more clearly what’s going on and help you develop better coping skills, become more resilient, find meaning, peace and make life work.

He who thanks but with the lips
Thanks but in part;
The full, the true Thanksgiving
Comes from the heart.
- John Augustus Shedd

This past week, our therapists wrote and created sweet messages of gratitude and thankfulness. All week we ran around like little elves trying to create sweet surprise moments for each other. When we gathered together for a time of fellowship, everyone shared how not only the words that were written touched them but the effort to create a special moment did, as well.

What can you do during this season of Thanksgiving to not only share your gratitude but express it in a precious way for all involved?

The holiday season is here! Getting together with family and friends during the holidays used to be about reconnecting and celebrating. However, with recent political discord, many families report more disconnection and heated escalation.

To try to avoid this, here are 5 tips we recommend for people who are worried about holiday conflicts.

We only have so much time with our families to let the tension divide us. The goal is to leave with smiles and hugs not hurt and hatred.

Mad is not bad! Anger gets a bad rep, but is a healthy emotion. There are no such things as “bad” emotions! We all feel mad, sad, disappointed, and hurt sometimes so guess what? So are our children! We cannot always make them happy, nor is that our goal. Our goal is for them to name the emotion, be aware of what that emotion is telling them, and regulate (or co-regulate when needed) when their nervous system gets dysregulated.

What happens if my child is kicking, screaming, hitting, and/or biting? We can all admit that is not okay. The feeling is okay and allowed, but not behavior. Sometimes we put adult expectations on our little kids brains, but they are still under construction. We cannot expect them to automatically know how to express and manage the hard big feelings that wash over them. We have to teach them by co-regulating and modeling healthy ways to manage our emotions.

Feel overwhelmed or not sure where to start? We have some wonderful children’s therapists and parent coach to help you get started!

“Every veteran has a story worth honoring and hearing.” We appreciate all of our service members and their families. You all have a story to tell about the sacrifice and commitment it takes to be a family that serves this country.

Did you know that overthinking usually comes from your brain trying to protect you? Throughout life when we have trauma, our brain learns to anticipate danger. Overthinking can start to feel like a survival tool to help protect you from things going wrong. This becomes an automatic response!

When there is not a threat and your brain still responds this way, it leaves you stuck with worry and stress. The good news is that it is possible to rewire the brain! Turning to a realistic or positive response is a great first step.

October is recognized as Depression Awareness Month each year. The purpose is to increase understanding, decrease stereotypes, and help educate on how depression and other mental health issues impact people.

Everyone feels sad or low, but these feelings usually pass. Depression is different and has severe symptoms that affect how people feel, think, and act. It is important to learn the signs and symptoms of depression, how it is diagnosed, treatments, and ways to get help.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! We want to shine a light on how receiving this diagnosis could affect a person’s mental health. After being diagnosed with breast cancer, people commonly experience many ups and downs before, during, and after treatment. Some people may feel anxious, sad, or stressed but find that these feelings subside as time passes. But sometimes these feelings can linger for months or even years and begin to affect your daily life. It’s important to remember that no feeling is right or wrong — and there is no right or wrong moment to experience it.

We would be honored to support anyone with a breast cancer diagnosis and their family members.
